WCSB Cleveland (89.3 FM) is a freeform/indie radio station broadcasting out of Cleveland, OH, USA. An early adopter of Internet streaming, WCSB began broadcasting online before it became the mainstream/norm. One of their programs was the Noise Rotation, a 2-hour show that rotated though different hosts each week and specialized in noisy, harsh, avant-garde, brutal, abrasive, odd, surreal, drone, electronic, industrial, challenging, and other weird programming. I managed to record the Noise...

We propose a method to study lattice QCD at finite temperature (T) and chemical potential (\mu). We test the method and compare it with the Glasgow method using n_f=4 staggered QCD with imaginary \mu. The critical endpoint (E) of QCD on the Re(\mu)-T plane is located. We use n_f=2+1 dynamical staggered quarks with semi-realistic masses on L_t=4 lattices. Our results are based on {\cal{O}}(10^3-10^4) configurations.

The Cyclic Model is a radical, new cosmological scenario which proposes that the Universe undergoes an endless sequence of epochs which begin with a `big bang' and end in a `big crunch.' When the Universe bounces from contraction to re-expansion, the temperature and density remain finite. The model does not include a period of rapid inflation, yet it reproduces all of the successful predictions of standard big bang and inflationary cosmology. We point out numerous novel elements that have not...

We generalise our previous observation on the invariance of the Jarlskog determinant to matter effects in neutrino oscillations. Within the context of standard neutrino oscillation theory with matter effects, we present the complete set of (five) matter invariant observables for neutrino propagation in matter. We give some examples of their application.

We prove two results about vector bundles on singular algebraic surfaces. First, on proper surfaces there are vector bundles of rank two with arbitrarily large second Chern number and fixed determinant. Second, on separated normal surfaces any coherent sheaf is the quotient of a vector bundle. As a consequence, for such surfaces the Quillen K-theory of vector bundles coincides with the Waldhausen K-theory of perfect complexes. Examples show that, on nonseparated schemes, usually many coherent...

I develop n-site cluster approximations for a stochastic sandpile in one dimension. A height restriction is imposed to limit the number of states: each site can harbor at most two particles (height z_i \leq 2). (This yields a considerable simplification over the unrestricted case, in which the number of states per site is unbounded.) On the basis of results for n \leq 11 sites, I estimate the critical particle density as zeta_c = 0.930(1), in good agreement with simulations. A coherent anomaly...

A chiral random matrix model with complex eigenvalues is solved as an effective model for QCD with non-vanishing chemical potential. We derive new matrix model correlation functions which predict the local fluctuations of complex Dirac operator eigenvalues at zero virtuality. The parameter which measures the non-Hermiticity of the Dirac matrix is identified with the chemical potential. In the phase with broken chiral symmetry all spectral correlations of the Dirac eigenvalues are calculated as...

Using currents with minimal singularities, we construct pointwise minimal multiplicities for a real pseudo-effective $(1,1)$-class $\alpha$ on a compact complex $n$-fold $X$, which are the local obstructions to the numerical effectivity of $\alpha$. The negative part of $\alpha$ is then defined as the real effective divisor $N(\alpha)$ whose multiplicity along a prime divisor $D$ is just the generic multiplicity of $\alpha$ along $D$, and we get in that way a divisorial Zariski decomposition of...

We apply a proposal of Yuen and Tombesi, for treating stochastic problems with negative diffusion, to the analytically soluble problem of the single-mode anharmonic oscillator. We find that the associated stochastic realizations include divergent trajectories. It is possible, however, to solve the stochastic problem exactly, but the averaging must be performed with great care.

A hydrodynamic mechanism of interactions of colloidal particles is considered. The mechanism is based on the assumption of tiny background flows in the experimental cells during measurements by Grier at al. [1-6]. Both trivial (shear flow) and non-trivial (force propagation through viscous fluid) effects are taken into account for two colloidal particles near a wall bounding the solvent. Expressions for the radial (attractive or repulsive) forces and the polar torques are obtained. Quantitative...

We discuss the nature of the unidentified EGRET source 3EG J1621+8203. In an effort to identify the gamma-ray source, we have examined X-ray images of the field from ROSAT PSPC, ROSAT HRI, and ASCA GIS. Of the several faint X-ray point sources in the error circle of 3EG J1621+8203, most are stars or faint radio sources, unlikely to be counterparts to the EGRET source. The most notable object in the gamma-ray error box is the bright FR I radio galaxy NGC 6251. If 3EG J1621+8203 corresponds to...

During a previous outburst phase, the neutron star 4U 2129+47 exhibited evidence for a spatially extended corona via broad, partial X-ray eclipses occurring periodically on the 5.24 hr orbit. Since 1983, however, 4U 2129+47 has entered a quiescent state several orders of magnitude fainter. We have performed a 37 ksec Chandra observation of 4U 2129+47 to determine whether an extended coronal structure also exists in quiescence. Total eclipses are found, and the rapidity of the eclipse ingress...

We analyze the simplest possible realization of the curvaton scenario, where a nearly scale-invariant spectrum of adiabatic perturbations is generated by conversion of an isocurvature perturbation generated during inflation, rather than the usual inflationary mechanism. We explicitly evaluate all the constraints on the model, under both the assumptions of prompt and delayed reheating, and outline the viable parameter space.

We show that the indices of certain twisted Dirac operators vanish on a $Spin$-manifold $M$ of positive sectional curvature if the symmetry rank of $M$ is $\geq 2$ or if the symmetry rank is one and $M$ is two connected. We also give examples of simply connected manifolds of positive Ricci curvature which do not admit a metric of positive sectional curvature and positive symmetry rank.

Disturbing of a spacetime geometry may result in the appearance of an oscillating and damped radiation - the so-called quasinormal modes. Their periods of oscillations and damping coefficients carry unique information about the mass and the angular momentum, that would allow one to identify the source of the gravitational field. In this talk we present recent bounds on the diffused energy, applicable to the Schwarzschild spacetime, that give also rough estimates of the energy of excited...

We construct examples of two-step and three-step nilpotent Lie groups whose automorphism groups are `small' in the sense of either not having a dense orbit for the action on the Lie group, or being nilpotent (the latter being stronger). From the results we get also new examples of compact manifolds covered by two-step simply connected Lie groups, which do not admit Anosov automorphisms.
